A Guide to Applying for Financial Aid

Last updated 3 years ago

Paying for school can seem like quite the challenge, especially when it comes to wading through financial aid forms. However, finding funds doesn’t need to be an insurmountable task. Follow this guide for a smooth financial aid application process:

The first step to receiving aid is to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA. The FAFSA uses your financial information to look at your income and need and is essential to getting scholarship, grants, and loans. Even if you are confident you will not qualify for federal aid, you should still submit this form, as many schools require a FAFSA to be filed before considering you for grants and scholarships. This application requires your tax information or, if you are under 24 years old, your parent’s tax information. The federal loans you can obtain through your FAFSA often offer lower interest rates than the private student loan sector.

Private Student Loans

Private student loans are another type of aid that can be a good way to cover the cost of school. They can be used to pay for tuition and fees, books, supplies, and living expenses. If you decide to use student loans, then you are typically not required to make payments on your loans while you are enrolled in school and taking classes.

Grants and Scholarships

Grants and scholarships are awarded to students based on need or merit. Unlike student loans, as long as you fulfill any requirements attached to the award, repayment is not required. A large variety of organizations offer many grants and scholarships to students of all types. Visit your school’s website or look for scholarship search engines to find scholarships and grants for which you may quality.

Seeking financial aid can be a complicated task, but if you seek aid early, then you will find the funding you need quickly and efficiently.
