Rose Germain graduates from the FCC Nursing Program this month. She is also the President of FCC’s first FNSA chapter, which she helped to establish. Here she answers some questions about her experience.
Tell us about your experience in the FCC Nursing Program.
I am blessed to have been graced with my fellow classmates, instructors and professors. I am thankful for the words of wisdom, advice and lessons I learned while in school. In my eyes, the true essence of nursing is caring for others and ourselves. I really do enjoy helping others, whether that be interpreting for a patient that doesn't understand English, consoling a younger patient in the hospital, or having a constant smile on my face. It is these examples that show nursing as it relates to caring for others in emotional, physical, mental and psychological ways. Nurses have the ability to elicit changes in their community, workplace and even legislation. To do this, you have to have the foundation of caring to really carry your passion forward for change.
What advice do you have for current and future students in your program?
My advice for current and future nursing students is to always believe in yourself and in what you want to accomplish. You came here with a purpose; you have a story that is specific to your journey to nursing. Even if you have obstacles to overcome or have non-believers, do not give up. It’s okay if you stumble; maybe you needed that stumble to help you become stronger.
What is FNSA?
FNSA is Florida Nursing Students of America. It is an organization of student nurses, that starts the progression into a professional career. The main reason that a chapter was initiated at Florida Career College was to show that we as students are serious about our future in nursing. Other nursing schools have a chapter that show how committed they are to the professional development of future nurses and so do we. FNSA is a great opportunity for our students to become familiar to the organization and philosophies of the various nurses’ associations.
Why should other students join FNSA?
Other nursing students should get involved in FNSA to become future leaders, future innovators, and future nurses. FNSA helps build future leaders by cultivating on leadership skills that can began with FNSA, such as an officer position, community member, or a delegate position. The student will become comfortable leading their chapter and fellow students in all programs and activities. These leaders possess confidence, integrity and dedication that is ideal, not only for the organization, but also for the future workplace. These strengths allow you to stand out and be more assertive in the eyes of others. FNSA helps future nurses expand and focus the vision and passion they have for their careers.
